AnStatue 8-foot-tall stylized cast bronze statue titled “Liberty Let’s Roll” is casting a magnanimous shadow across the mountains and plains of America as it rolls eastward on its month-long mission building of patriotism and inspiration.

Departing Boise, Idaho, after its historic unveiling on the 4th of July, 2008, the striking sculpture is the inspired creation of critically acclaimed artist Irene Deely of Boise.  Owner of the Woman of Steel Gallery in nearby Old Towne Garden City, Idaho, Ms. Deely began this creative endeavor shortly after the 9/11 disasters in New York City, the remote fields of Pennsylvania and near the tidal basin in Washington, D.C., that left thousands of innocent Americans dead at the hands of terrorists.

Virtually before the fires were quelled and the smoke had dissipated Irene began her patriotic sculpting passion with a desk-top sized version of the sculpture with its stylized Statute of Liberty thrusting a Kung-fu-style kick out in defiance to those who would destroy the fiber and fabric of America.  In the following 7-plus years, Ms. Deely has been motivated and moved by the ringing words of United Flight 93 hero Todd Beamer whose resounding mantra “Let’s Roll” has served as a signal beacon under which Americans can ramp up their patriotism. As a result, the larger than life versions of “Lady Liberty! Let’s Roll” is now rolling across America towed behind a motor home as part of a patriotic brigade designed to help all Americans break barriers, overcome obstacles and create with a passion.

In keeping with those heroes of United Flight 93, “we can either choose to be victims of our circumstances or kick through the obstacles.  If Liberty were a person, she would not be sitting around,” Ms. Deely said.

Ms. Deely said as the tour commenced, that getting a nation to change its ways may not be easy, but she is convinced her statute sculpture and the message behind it will show people that even during the most trying of social and economic times, we are a resilient and resourceful people.

Irene Juliette Deely has succeed in blending a humble farm upbringing with a passionate fire and flare for creative artistry to bring to full size and strength a symbol of the fires of liberty and freedom that burn in most all Americans.

The creator of the sculpture “Lady Liberty! Let’s Roll” which is traversing America at present at the start of a 30-day “whistle-stop-like” tour, Irene was born in a tiny Norwegian community of the Palouse Country in Eastern Washington.  The rich traditions and beliefs of her Scandinavian background were woven into the simple life and beauty of the rolling wheat fields of her birth to influence a unique approach to art.  Growing up later in the thickly wooded environment of the western foothills of the Cascade Mountains, offered an endless resource for creativity and development of an organic esthetic.  Irene was encouraged throughout her formal education to pursue a wide variety of creative outlets from dramatic costume and set design to many fine art applications.  After extensive travel throughout Europe, Asia and the Middle East, she returned home to complete a fine art degree with an emphasis in sculpture at Boise State University.  Teaching art at the elementary and middle school levels for several years led eventually into full-time freelance pursuits.  She is currently working as a metal sculptor out of her Garden City, Ida studio/gallery where she fabricates her welded steel work and sculpts the models that are sent to Parks Bronze Foundry in Enterprise, Oregon for casting.  Much of her work is held in private collections through individual commissions.  A large public welded steel work, "Commitment" may be seen in Eagle, Idaho and “Pipe Tree” at The Boise Watershed.  At present, Irene is developing designs from a life size representation of an Idaho Pioneer to limited edition bronzes and one-of-kind welded steel work.  Visits to her Studio and Gallery are invited but an appointment is recommended.

Asked why she has chosen sculpting as her vocation and her passion, she says “My compulsion to create three-dimensional forms is not unlike that which motivates other communications.  I make things as a way of connecting with others - to know that I am not alone.  Searching for new, more effective means to understand shared human experiences is my passion.”

And reflecting on her craft, she says “I live and die every day in my studio because so much of my soul is spent in the process. After a full day of studio work, it feels like “the end” at many different levels, as the accumulation of welding burns, acrid air, grime of metal and heaviness of the work combine with the effort to make it communicate a personal emotion, takes its toll.  I create primarily from intuition while applying the fine art training from my formal education.”

And about the Lady Liberty! Let’s Roll piece itself, Irene expresses: “I was compelled to sculpt a form which communicated the very raw, terrifying emotions that my world was plunged into following 9/11.  Paralyzing fears gave way to determination and courage to move beyond the frightening events of that time.  By sculpting, I was able to find personal freedom from being victimized by circumstances to determine my own destiny.”

Striking forth from Boise with the passion and purpose embodied by the Statute of Liberty itself,  the “Free Liberty” road trip with its  eight-foot cast bronze enlargement of the sculpture “Liberty Let’s Roll” as the centerpiece, will embark on a month-long round trip road venture to New York City to foster and inspire a sense of national patriotic spirit.

“We want Americans to remember the horrific events associated with 9/11 and to rekindle and restore the love of liberty and freedom that was so prevalent following that day of national tragedy,” said Irene Deely, the artist who created the sculpture and the moving force behind the “Liberty Let’s Roll” campaign.

The striking sculpture, a slightly modernized version of the Statute of Liberty employing a Kung-Fu-style kick -- along with the titled moniker “Liberty Let’s Roll” inspired by the challenge uttered by United Airlines Flight 93 passenger Todd Beamer – will help “Americans realize that we can either be victims of our circumstances of kick through the obstacles that confront liberty and freedom.”

The tour will include a motorhome with  trailer pulling the stylized statue with its first stop scheduled for  Tuesday, July 8 & 9th  at Fort Carson  where it was on display.  Other stops on the tour  are Fort Riley, Kansas 11th 7 12th, Topeeka and Shawnee County Public Library, Foundry Arts Center, St. Charles, Missouri July 15th, Fort Bragg, North Carolina 18th & 19th. ,  Washington, D.C. three days  from 21 to 23; arriving in New York City on July 24 and being on exhibit in The Big Apple for four days.

The return trip to Boise will stop in Shanksville, Penn.,  the site of the United 93 crash for two days starting Aug. 29,  the statute will travel to Rapid City, S.D via Chicago and on to  Sturgis for seven days beginning Aug. 1-7 in Sturgis, S.D. then proceed to Jackson Hole for exhibit on Aug. 9 arriving home to Boise on the 11th..

“I was profoundly impacted by the courage of those who were confronted with horrific obstacles resulting from the terrorist attacks,” Ms. Deely said as the entourage readied to leave on Sunday, July 6 on the month-long journey.  “As a metal sculptor I vowed to one day do what I could to inspire people to embrace the freedom that we all take for granted.  But it wasn’t until discovering my own personal freedom that I understood the burning desire and urgency to move with it.  This revelation led to enlarging a sculpture that I created from the inspiration of Todd Beamer’s actions on 9/11 to this scale and take it out on the road,” she said. The money to pay for this venture is coming strictly from her personal finances and individual personal donations from regular citizens.
